In response to public outcry over the leak, John Key announced that he would not be seeking re-election in September 2020.

How indishell hacked phones?
Indishell is a group of hackers that specializes in hacking the phones of politicians, businessmen, and other high-profile figures. They are so good at what they do that they have managed to access the audio recordings of some of the most powerful people in the world. Earlier this year, they hacked into a phone owned by Prime Minister Theresa May and released some of her personal conversations online. One such recording revealed her thoughts on Brexit negotiations and it became known as the Theresa tapes.
Other indiscreet recordings were made public too, including one with the UK’s ambassador to the US, Kim Darroch. In his conversation with Donald Trump’s chief adviser Kellyanne Conway, Darroch said he felt there was no hope for a trade deal between US and UK because of an anti-trade sentiment in London. Mrs May had been trying to convince Trump that she would be pro-business when it came to trade deals.
